Wednesday 15 November 2017, 02:00pm - 05:00pm

Location Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC), Higher Cambridge Street, Manchester, M15 6FH

An afternoon of talks to introduce the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Statistics Group and its current work in clinical studies. The focus will be on research sections in statistics for imaging studies, early phase trials, laboratory studies and ophthalmology.  The members of NIHR Statistics group are applied medical statisticians who seek to improve the accessibility and communication of sound and appropriate statistical practice among statisticians, scientists and clinicians by networking and holding education and publications events. One of the drivers for setting up the group originally was that many statisticians work in mixed specialty environments where they need to be ready to apply/adapt methods to a wide range of situations. This can be very challenging! We will describe how the group began and how it has grown to over 350 members from all parts of the UK and all parts of the NIHR infrastructure.  The group is currently established in research areas such as imaging studies, early phase trials, laboratory studies and ophthalmology.  We will talk about our activities to date, including how the research sections have evolved and what they have achieved and will speak about our aspirations to better promote the valuable role statisticians play, facilitate effective statistician-non statistician communication and develop statistical training for non-statisticians. We are keen to collaborate further and are having early discussions about further groups in other methodological areas.

See https://statistics-group.nihr.ac.uk/ for more details and do come to meet us!
