Each year since 2014, the University of Manchester has placed its social science undergraduates into the workplace to apply their quantitative data analysis skills to real world research.

Go Figure! brings these students together with their host organisations to celebrate the University of Manchester Q-Step Summer internships 2017 achievements.

This event is for anyone interested in finding our more about how work-placed learning helps develops data-savvy social scientists.

Programme

13:15 - 13:25 Welcome and opening address: Professor Jackie Carter, Q-Step co-director

13:25 - 13:50 Nassos Stylianou, senior data journalist, BBC ‘Storytelling with Data'

13:50 - 14:20 Deirdre Appel, Open Data Watch: ‘How Open Data Watch are supporting statistical capacity building: Data revolution and the Sustainable Development Goals’

14:20 - 14:30 Short Q&A (chair: Dr Marta Cantijoch, Q-Step lecturer)

14:30 – 15:15 45-minute poster session and a chance to talk to students, with tea and cakes

15:15 - 16:15 Q-Step placements: Ten three-minute presentations (3MP) (chair: Dr Lisa Williams, Q-Step senior lecturer and director of Methods@Manchester)

16:15 - 16:25 Short break whilst voting takes place and judges confer

16:25 - 16:40 3MP and Poster Results announced (Dr Simon Gallacher, head of student programmes, Nuffield Foundation)

16:40 – 17:00 Wrap up and close (Professor John MacInnes, University of Edinburgh)
