Wednesday 22 November 2017, 09:00am - 04:00pm

Location The British Academy, 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, SW1Y 5AH

Managing and making sense of numerical data of all kinds is becoming ever more important to a growing range of disciplines across not only the social and life sciences but also the humanities and elsewhere. It is vital that undergraduates learn these quantitative skills. Yet except for a few disciplines such as physics or economics, the majority of students arrive with poor or rusty maths skills. Even those with A-Level maths may struggle to apply their maths knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.

This puts a premium on effective 'quants' teaching in undergraduate degree programmes. In the social sciences the Q-Step programme has explored new and more effective ways of delivering these skills. The British Academy and ESRC have promoted the development of these skills across the educational life course.

A mixture of presentations, panel discussions and breakout workshops, this conference will review the experience of Q-Step and the lessons learned so far about how to deliver these skills to undergraduates. It will make links across the social and life sciences and the humanities, to see what lessons disciplines can learn from each other. It will review the potential of online and offline resources to help in teaching, and look at how student engagement and high standards can best be promoted

Chair: Professor John MacInnes, Professor of Sociology at the University of Edinburgh and British Academy Strategic Adviser for Quantitative Skills
