AGM of the new SIG on Data Ethics - MEMBERS ONLY EVENT

In June RSS Council approved the formation of a new special interest group (SIG) on data ethics, to explore the potential for a new Section. Since then the committee has been engaging with other organisations and Sections of the RSS.

We have mapped the landscape to identify who else is doing what, and what gaps there are where the RSS could best direct its efforts. Part of this is to understand what RSS members are concerned about in data ethics and what sort of activity would be of most value.

This meeting will present our landscape mapping, some work on the skills and professional responsibilities from Data Science Section (with support from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries), and our future plans. RSS members are encouraged to attend and shape the direction of the SIG's activity.

Indicative Agenda (to follow formal AGM business):

  • International landscape and gaps in activity - Peter Elias
  • Plans for 2019 conference and meetings - Tom King
  • From baffling obscure to .. visible: data ethics in the media - Timandra Harkness
  • National Statistician’s Data Ethics Advisory Committee: providing assurance of the public good - Simon Whitworth

These will be short presentations, leaving around half the meeting for discussion - concerns and suggestions, whether or not you can attend, are welcome in advance of the meeting.

The meeting will conclude by 5.45 pm to allow members attending David Spiegelhalter's talk 'Be prepared to show your working!' to make their way to King's Place

Please, find the venue information at the following link: http://www.liftislington.org.uk/find-us.

Any non-members interested in attending please contact the event organiser
