The Role

NUAcT offers five-year, well-resourced Fellowships which can lead to faculty appointments and we are recruiting 100 new Fellows over the next five years.

Through the NUAcT fellowship scheme, we are looking to recruit a diverse cohort of investigators with the talent and motivation to become future research and academic leaders in their field. As a fellow at Newcastle University, you will develop your career in an exciting working environment, be provided with a high level of dedicated time for research, have the freedom to develop your research interests and have access to our cutting-edge facilities. We are an anchor institution in a vibrant city and work closely with external partners, conducting research that benefits our region, our country and the world. Our international research is facilitated by having physical bases in four locations (Newcastle, London, Singapore and Malaysia).

This specific post is associated with a new initiative recently launched at Newcastle University, to address the key Data Science and Biomedical challenges to enable a long-term vision of Preventive, Predictive, Personalised, Participatory, Precision medicine. Aligning with the Government’s plan for the future of healthcare the program embraces a major paradigm shift, moving away from a detect-and-cure approach and towards personalised interventions aimed at preventing chronic diseases and extending the wellness state in ageing individuals.

Underpinning this paradigm shift is an understanding of "Big Health Data”, including individuals’ genomics data and biochemical markers, their Electronic Health Records, as well as new kinds of digital biomarkers data extracted from an increasing variety of personal self-monitoring devices. Extracting value out of this data requires a combination of Biomedical and Data Science expertise.

To address these challenges we are bringing together biomedical experts and computational scientists through our participation in the Alan Turing Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence under its “Revolutionising Healthcare” programme.

We seek applicants who have the potential to develop into independent research investigators. You must have a relevant PhD (or equivalent) and postdoctoral experience, a track record of high quality research, and be aspiring to apply for externally funded fellowships or other major research grant awards.

The ideal candidate for this post will either have a background in biomedicine with a strong interest/expertise in data science and/or a background in data science with a strong interest/expertise in biomedical applications. The NUAcT programme offers personalised cross-training to ensure that Fellows are best positioned to work on data-driven biomedical research as part of a multidisciplinary team, with a strong focus on research impact.
