Employer name: Rothamsted Research
Salary: £29,842 - £32,315
Location (city/country): Harpenden, UK
Closing date: 23 September 2018
Overview Of Role
A postdoctoral or postgraduate statistician is required to join the Statistics Group within the Computational and Analytical Sciences Department at Rothamsted Research. The Statistics Group contributes statistical expertise and research to collaborative projects and research programmes across all areas of Rothamsted science, from studies of genetics, biochemistry, cell biology and soil processes to investigations of sustainable food production at the ecosystem and landscape scale. The Statistics Group also provides statistical consultancy to all staff and students within the institute, supported by a well-established statistics training programme.
Rothamsted statisticians have a long tradition of collaborating on the design and analysis of field experiments and the application of a wide range of statistical modelling approaches, and have contributed to the development of agricultural statistics for nearly 100 years, since the appointment of R.A Fisher as the first Rothamsted statistician in 1919. Increasingly, however, our focus is shifting towards the analysis of 'omics data from lab studies, and to the combination of data from multiple sources and experiments, requiring the application of a range of modern statistical modelling and multivariate analysis methods.
The successful applicant will act as liaison statistician for an identified group of scientists (both staff and PhD students), and be expected to develop expertise in particular application areas by building up medium-term collaborations. The post-holder will also be involved in the delivery and development of statistical training courses within the institute.
A broad working knowledge of the application of statistics is required; experience related to the application of statistical approaches in plant and animal sciences would be an advantage, as would knowledge of the GenStat statistical package and R statistical programming environment. Experience in small-group teaching would be beneficial, as would experience of working in multidisciplinary research teams, and of communicating statistical concepts to non-statisticians.
Interviews will be held: 11 October 2018
