Help inspire the statisticians of tomorrow

A new careers workshop designed to inspire future statisticians, needs input from those currently in the profession. Through hands-on experience of the type of work statisticians actually do, the getstats ‘Careers in Statistics’ workshop aims to help 16-18 year-olds become better aware of the role of statistics in society as well as the range of careers open to statisticians.

As a statistician for the day, students would be assigned the sort of task a government, medical, marketing, pharmaceutical, environmental, sports or engineering statistician might undertake – and use the statistics they already know to solve a problem.

Lyndsey Taylor, a member of the RSS Local Group in Sheffield, is keen to hear from statisticians working in these different fields who could volunteer the time to join an online working group which will develop the content of these exercises, ready for use during next year’s National Science and Engineering Week (15–24 March 2013). Thereafter, the exercises would be a resource for use by RSS Local Groups and any others keen to reach out to local schools.

The getstats campaign plans to develop similar stats activity packs for seemingly non-statistical jobs such as managers and lawyers.
