For many years, the Royal Statistical Society has worked with partners to support third sector organisations. As part of our Statisticians for Society initiative, we have matched statisticians with pro bono opportunities from Operational Research Society, Pro Bono Economics and DataKind UK.
The Society has begun developing its own pro bono scheme for charities in the UK, supported by a new grant from the Big Lottery Fund. The pilot scheme will pair volunteer statisticians from the RSS membership with charities looking to use data and statistics in making better decisions.
We will approach charities that lack the resources and skills needed to perform research and statistical analysis. When we have secured pro bono projects, we will then send round a call for participation to volunteers, who can then decide if they wish to get involved.
We plan to also promote more trustee positions to RSS members, as a way of increasing statisticians on charity boards.
