The first evening meeting organised by the History of Statistics Section was held at the Royal Statistical Society on 6 April, 2017. The speaker was RSS archives consultant Janet Foster, who gave a talk titled 'Exploring the RSS Archives'.
The meeting combined RSS history with archival material, a number of examples of the latter were on display to look at and talk to Janet Foster one-on-one after the question and answer session. Examples of the material displayed included the minute book where the RSS's first minutes were recorded as well as nomination forms for elected fellows of the society.
Janet explained how the archives currently hold only core material due to space reasons and also because the RSS has moved physically so many times that several items have been lost. For instance, fellow's files have been discarded due to lack of room for storage. A list of the material can be requested to her by those who are interested.
The talk mixed Janet Foster's own story at the RSS archives with explanations of her current work. Thus, she described the type of enquiries she gets showing the archival material available. She commented on how technology (particularly Jstor) has made her work easier.
Following the talk, there was an opportunity to look at some examples of the material held in the archives and discuss them informally with Janet.
Janet can provide a list of the material held to anyone who is interested.
