Glasgow local group meeting: So we’re all data scientists now?

Written by Web News Editor on . Posted in Sections and local group meeting reports

On 30 November 2017, the RSS Glasgow local group hosted their AGM event with a seminar by Alastair Rushworth, data scientist at Tesco Bank. Claire Miller (as exiting committee chair) introduced the event by leading attendees through the group’s AGM. There were several changes to the committee positions and memberships for 2018, and Claire thanked all committee members for their contributions to date and invited approaches from the seminar attendees for new committee members.

Alastair followed the AGM with an excellent talk discussing from his point of view the questions: What is data science? Why is it so hyped? Where do statisticians fit in? Alastair explored the role of the data scientist with the audience and provided a fascinating overview of the vast collection of associated software and tools. The take-home message for a statistical audience was that data science is more than just statistics, but statistical training plays a key role, and there’s scope for statistics to play a bigger role through inference, uncertainty and effective communication.

The AGM and seminar were both very well attended, with an audience of around 70 people.
