The winner of the sixth Statistical Excellence in the Pharmaceutical Industry Award has been announced as Richard Nixon, associate director in the Statistical Methodology and Consulting Group at Novartis in Basel.

The award, made jointly between the Royal Statistical Society and PSI (Statisticians in the Pharmaceutical Industry), will be presented at an awards ceremony at next week's PSI annual conference taking place in Berlin (22-25 May 2016).

Richard (pictured right) was nominated for the award by Frank Bretz, a Statistical Methodology group member at Novartis, for work titled ‘Enhancing decision-making in drug development using quantitative approaches’.

The winning entry was described by the judges as ‘providing strong evidence that you have made a major contribution to better decision-making at Novartis. It was clear that the quantitative methods you have developed and implemented have reduced the risk of failed drug development programs and increased the likelihood of others, ultimately increasing the chances of bringing efficacious and safe medicines to patients in need.’

The RSS would like to offer sincere congratulations to Richard for this excellent piece of work, and would also like to thank the other entrants for taking part.
