The RSS very pleased to announce the first winners of its Member Referrals scheme: congratulations to Klaudia Walter and Larissa Conradt.
The scheme rewards existing members who encourage a new member to join the Royal Statistical Society. Every time a new member is introduced to the society via the refer scheme, both members are entered into a prize draw to win a year’s free membership.
The inaugural recipients of free membership are Klaudia Walter (pictured left) and Larissa Conradt (pictured below right). Klaudia has been a fellow since 2004, having joined while studying for a PhD in statistical genomics at the University of Cambridge. She is now a statistical geneticist at the Wellcome Trust’s Sanger Institute. ‘I enjoyed going to London for RSS meetings and to RSS conferences,’ she said. ‘For me, the RSS was useful by creating a network within the statistics community.’
Klaudia introduced Larissa Conradt to the RSS, who has a PhD in ecology and worked for 14 years in research but changed careers into statistics after taking RSS exams. Since becoming a statistician for the NHS in September last year, Larissa was persuaded of the benefits of becoming a fully fledged member of the RSS. ‘I joined because I am very interested in the Society’s work to further statistical education worldwide, including poorer countries in Africa and Asia,’ she explains.
The Member refer scheme was launched earlier this year to encourage more members to join our statistical community to strengthen our work promoting the discipline and better use of statistics in society, as well as benefit from the great networking opportunities the Society offers.
The Society will draw another two names in a couple of months’ time, so if you know someone interested in joining, make sure they enter your membership number into the online joining form, and you will both be entered into the prize draw.
