Council, the trustees of the Royal Statistical Society, met last week for the second time in 2017. The annual accounts for 2016 were approved as well as an inflation rate increase in membership fees. Both of these matters will go to the Society’s AGM in September.
Council discussed the issue of reproducibility and p-values and the need through increased statistical literacy in this area. Members of Council also discussed some projects which will be commencing in 2018 including implementing a new database system and work on refurbishing the Society’s premises.
It also received an update on the policy and public affairs work of the Society during the recent election period and a report on the new approach to Discussion Meetings (formerly Ordinary Meetings).
A number of governance appointments were made that will take effect from the beginning of 2018: Sharon Witherspoon as vice president for education; John Kent as honorary officer for publications; Sara Hilditch as honorary officer for membership and Stephen Penneck as honorary officer for national statistics.
Council will meet again in November.
