Deborah Ashby confirmed as new RSS president elect

Written by Web News Editor on . Posted in News

We are delighted to announce that Professor Deborah Ashby is to be the next RSS president after David Spiegelhalter’s term of office comes to a close at the end of 2018.

Deborah is chair of medical statistics and clinical trials at Imperial College London, where she is co-director of Imperial Clinical Trials Unit and the deputy head of Imperial School of Public Health. She was awarded an OBE for services to medicine in the 2009 New Year's Honours List, and was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2012. She is also a Chartered Statistician.

Deborah was chosen from a list of nominees put forward by RSS fellows to the Society's President Nominating Committee and recommended to Council, which endorsed the nomination earlier this year. Her nomination was uncontested.

'I am deeply honoured to have been elected as the next RSS President', said Deborah, when the announcement was confirmed. 'I joined the Society as a new graduate and have benefited so much from it ever since. Its membership is diverse, and includes those from business and industry, government, the public sector and the academic world. In all of those spheres there are vibrant debates and emerging challenges about data, how we can best use them, and how we can inspire and support a new generation to meet these challenges. I very much look forward to leading the Society at this exciting time.'

Deborah joins a long and illustrious list of RSS presidents, the first of whom was inaugurated in 1834; all are listed on our past presidents page
