The RSS is delighted to again be part of the Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarship scheme, which will continue into 2018/19.

The scheme supports scholars with excellent mathematical knowledge and the potential to be an inspirational maths teacher with a tax-free bursary, training courses and free membership of professional bodies including the Royal Statistical Society.

The £22k tax-free bursary is paid during students’ initial teacher training (ITT) year and is followed by two later payments of at least £5k (enhanced payments of £7.5k if teaching in specified areas of England) in scholars’ third and fifth year of teaching (provided they teach in a state-funded school after completing the ITT).

Scholars are also offered CPD events arranged and run by specialists in maths education, including a session organised in partnership with the RSS.

Other partners involved in the scheme are the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the London Mathematical Society (LMS), Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI), The Mathematical Association (The MA) and the National STEM Learning Centre.

Scott Keir, RSS head of education and statistical literacy said: ‘The Royal Statistical Society welcomes the continuation of this scholarship scheme. The recruitment and retention of mathematics teachers is essential to ensure that young people develop the mathematics and statistics skills they will need for their future lives, employment, and further studies. I’ve been privileged to meet many of the existing maths teacher scholars, who are passionate about a career teaching mathematics and statistics. I look forward to meeting the scholars selected for the 2018/19 scheme.'

IMA chief executive David Youdan, said that last year, the scheme recruited more maths teaching scholars than ever before. 'Our incredible Scholars are making a real difference to the next generations mathematical knowledge,' he said. 'We look forward to meeting many, many more.'
