The Ecclesbourne School in Derbyshire were announced as the winners of a national mathematics and statistics competition organised the by Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education (RSSCSE) and sponsored by Winton Capital Management.
WinAtSchool is open to Year 10 and 11 pupils in UK secondary schools and aims to present maths and stats in a fun and accessible way. All competing pupils took part in an online quiz based on the Key Stage 4 curriculum, with each participant receiving a certificate. The second stage posed more challenging questions and 12 finalist schools were selected from the highest scorers.
A team of four from each school then competed in the final, which took place at the Royal Statistical Society’s headquarters in Errol Street on 8 July 2013.
The final proved to be tense and ended on a fastest-first tie-breaker between the final three schools; The Ecclesbourne School, St John’s Marlborough in Wiltshire and Kendrick School in Berkshire.
The event was hosted by Professor David Spiegelhalter OBE, co-author of the Norm Chronicles and presenter of the BBC documentary ‘Tails You Win’.
Professor Neville Davies of the RSSCSE said: ‘This competition has been fun for all involved, and we have received some fantastic feedback from teachers saying what a great idea it is. It has also thrown up some interesting factors demonstrating there may be weaknesses in the existing curriculum, and we hope the results could be used to influence future education policy in these core subjects.’
The winning team were presented with a £2.5k cheque by former RSS president, Professor David Hand (pictured above).
