RSS fellow appointed UK National Statistician

Today, the UK Statistics Authority announced that RSS fellow, Professor Sir Ian Diamond has been appointed as National Statistician. Sir Ian succeeds former RSS President, John Pullinger who stepped down from the role in June.

The UK National Statistician is the chief executive and board member of the UK Statistics Authority, permanent secretary of the Office for National Statistics and head of the Government Statistical Service. 

RSS adopts new Diversity and Inclusion policy

The RSS now has a Diversity and Inclusion policy that summarises the key principles and methods the Society will use to ensure that we are an inclusive organisation. All areas of RSS activity share responsibility in the implementation of the policy.

The policy was proposed to Council in March 2019 by the RSS Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, which regularly reviews progress and provides links to related activities such as the LMS Women in Mathematics Committee and the the RSS Special Interest Group on Women in Statistics and Data Science. The policy was approved by Council, which appointed Sara Hilditch CStat as RSS Diversity Champion to act as a point of contact for Council in its implementation. There is also a meeting conduct policy which applies to all RSS conferences events.

RSS welcomes select committee report on stats governance

The Royal Statistical Society welcomes the publication of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) report on the governance of official statistics. The RSS believes the report could make a significant contribution to strengthening the statistical system.

Winners announced for 2019 Campion and Early Career Writing awards

The winners of the 2019 RSS Statistical Excellence Awards were announced yesterday (11 July 2019) at a ceremony hosted by our president, Deborah Ashby. The awards celebrate the most outstanding contributions to statistics and data over the past year.

Government statisticians competed for the Campion Award for Excellence in Official Statistics, whilst younger statisticians were also commended for their work, through the Award for Excellence in Early Career Writing.

RSS signs letter urging government to support data strategy

The Royal Statistical Society has today (15 July 2019), along with ten other organisations, signed an open letter (PDF) to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Jeremy Wright, calling on the UK government to ensure the it uses the National Data Strategy and forthcoming Spending Review to transform the way the UK utilises its data.

The group calls for the National Data Strategy to go beyond public services and help shape how data is used in areas such as research funding, procurement rules, regulatory activities and legislation.
