Exercise: studying a press release - man bags and back pain

man bags
Goal: to study the press release behind an article and see if the main points are supported

Time: 10 minutes

Materials: press release, news article, teaching notes

This exercise gives students a look at a typical press release they might see in the workplace. Also included is an article based on it, from the Daily Telegraph. The press release announces the results of an internet poll carried out for the British Chiropractic Association, entitled What’s In Your Man Bag?  The goal of the exercise is to see how the press release was covered and assess the research behind it.

Have the students read through the news article and then tie key facts back to the press release.  Are they supported by the press release? What about the underlying research? Questions are included in the teaching notes.
